Malayalam stars plan a big show : Suryathejasode Amma

An elaborate show spanning just over four hours, with a lot of singing, dancing and other performances. That is what the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) show, Suryathejasode Amma, has in store for Bangaloreans.

And what's more, over eighty prominent stars of the Malayalam industry will be doing their bit by shaking a leg or crooning a few lines. "I can't pick just a few names. Every member of AMMA will be there on February 27 to perform at the show, which is part of the association's welfare activities. So, yes, the likes of Mammootty, Mohanlal, Prithviraj, Bhavana and Meera Jasmine, among others will be there," says actor Innocent, President of AMMA.

Suryathejasode Amma, incidentally, is a series of two shows, the first of which will be held in the city. "On February 27, Bangalore will be treated to this visual treat, after which we will proceed to Kozhikode, where the show will be on March 2," adds Innocent. In Bangalore, the show will be presented by the not-for-profit Karnataka Nair Service Society (KNSS).

This star-studded night will be an extension of the welfare activities that the association undertakes, adds Edavela Babu, secretary of AMMA. "The welfare activities were kick-started with the super hit movie 20-20, which was a salient effort to raise funds for the welfare of yesteryear Malayalam movie actors, and establish a pension scheme for ailing artistes. This, of course, was welcomed by all actors, who then wholeheartedly participated in the movie. Naturally, none of them had to think twice about being part of this show," says Babu.
The show, to be directed by director-cum-actor Lal, will feature performances woven together under the theme of the Navarasas. "Humour will be the highlight of the four and a half hour extravaganza, but we do intend to pull off a show that has all the nine emotions at its core. Movie actors, backed by an 80-member strong dance troupe will sing, dance, do mono-acts, mimicry and skits. And while we may not enlist the help of anybody else associated with cinema, keeping it strictly to performing artistes, we may request one or two singers to join us," says Lal.

But more than just entertaining audiences in the city, the event will also be the launch pad for the TV show, Mukilmoodiya Nakshtrangal. The TV show will be a reality pick on 50 veteran artistes from the Malayalam film industry, which will be a collector's edition for AMMA. While entry to the show is through free passes, any proceeds will be utilised to give these veterans a cash emolument of Rs.10,000 each, during the show, as well as establish a KNSS old age home in the city.
