Shammi Kapoor's death shocks Kannada film industry

  • Dancing King Shammi Kapoor's death early Sunday morning has shocked many Kannada film personalities who were close to the flamboyant star who changed the course of film entertainment in his heyday.

Director S.V.Rajendra Singh Babu, who helmed three Hindi films featuring Shammi Kapoor, was the first to express his shock about his favourite actor's death.

"Yes, I know Shammi sahab was suffering from illness from a long time. And he had led a full life for 79 years and showed his individuality in his performance. But I have been quite uneasy since I heard the news of his death," Babu told IANS.

"I had known Shammi Saab intimately and through me, many of his big fans in the Kannada film industry like legendary actor Dr. Vishnuvardhan and Ambareesh became very close to the stylish actor," he added.

Stressing on Shammi's unique style, the director called him a "fantastic actor".

"He packaged his performances with his signature style of acting with his profound talents. Teen aged girls use to like him so much that they were his biggest fans," added Babu.

Babu directed Shammi Kapoor in films like "Aaj Ka Dariya" in which Dilip Kumar and Rekha also played important roles, "Sharara" and "Ek Se Bhale Do".

"Some of these films were shot in studios in Bangalore and Ootacamund. Ater finishing his shoot, Shammi sahab would have some regular visitors that included lot of fans from the Kannada film industry," Babu recalled.

Renowned Kannada director, Puttanna Kanagal, who had directed Kannada film "Sakshathkara" with Shammi's father Prithviraj Kapoor and Hindi film "Zahreela Insaan" with the actor's nephew Rishi Kapoor was another great friend of Shammi Kapoor, Babu said.

In the early 1980s, Shammi had spent a whole evening in the home of Dr. Vishnuvardhan where he interacted with many of his fans in the industry.

Ambareesh, who even today is a great fan of Shammi Kapoor, remembered many occasions where he had opportunity to spend time with him.

"I would personally tell him how I sued to like his dances and style. Many times I mimicked some of his mannerisms in front of him," Ambareesh told IANS.

Even young actors like Ajay Rao said Shammi remained an all time entertainer of the Indian film industry.

"He was the real rebel in the industry who created his own style in films which became so popular that his fan base kept increasing. I had never seen Shammi Saab, but have seen many of his films. I can say that most of the young actors in our industry have been overawed by the hyperactive energy displayed by this great actor in his films," he said.

Marriage not anywhere close, says Anushka

Clearing all rumors about her marriage, Anushka said I'm not getting married any time soon now. In fact, not even in the next two to three years. I have two promising projects lined up and I want to concentrate on them for the time being.

"I am there in a Tamil film which has Karthi Sivakumar in the lead role. Also, I will be part of Selvaraghavan forthcoming venture, an official announcement on which is expected at the earliest. And in Tollywood, apart from films I'm currently part of, I've also signed a film opposite Nagarjuna, she says.

Saying that 'Arundhathi' is so close to her heart among the films she has acted so far, Anushka
explains, "My parents enjoyed the movie a lot. They normally don't watch a film more than once. But they watched Arundhathi twice.

It seems like no marriage bells for this beauty at the earliest!

Busy Girl- Kajal Agarwal

After tremendous success of Singham, Kajal Agarwal has gone places, especially in Bollywood. The actress is on the verge of signing yet another mega project in Hindi, while one more interesting offer is also on the line, say the sources. If all is well, Puri Jagannath who is now all set to direct a film with Abhishek Bachchan plans to rope in Kajal in the film, since the actress is already playing the female lead in the movie's Telugu version.

In the meantime, 'Nan Mahan Alla', Kajal's Tamil film, is expected to be remade in Hindi soon. Few top producers are competing with each other to acquire the remake rights and both of them have Kajal in mind to reprise the role.

In Tamil, she is all set to act in 'Maatraan', a Suriya starrer directed by K V Anand. "I have a meaty role to play in Maatraan. Happy to work with Suriya and Anand," she says.

'In the silver lining,' says Khushboo

  • This is an extremely important year for Khushboo. It's been 25 glorious years since the actress entered the south Indian film industry.

"I'm so happy and feel blessed to have survived in this industry for such a long time. Exactly 25 years ago, on August 14, my first Telugu film as an actress, 'Kaliyuga Pandavalu', released. Since then, there has been no looking back for me," says an elated Khushboo.

So, will she be throwing a party to celebrate the silver jubilee? "No, I'm not a party person and prefer the company of my loved ones on such important occassions," she smiles. The actress is currently busy with her Mollywood film, 'Mr Marumakan', in which she is paired with Bhagyaraj.

'Ceylon' will be Santhosh Sivan's next flick

  • Ace cinematographer - director Santosh Sivan is a busy man these days. While he is working hard to release his 'Urumi' in several languages, including Tamil, reports have started floating in the industry about his next project.

According to sources, Santosh Sivan is all set to start work on his next flick, which has been titled 'Ceylon'. Talking to a section of the media, Santhosh said that 'Ceylon' is his dream project, and will be about the lives of three men. He has also clarified that the film will have nothing to do with the LTTE.

A source close to Santosh confirms that the director has started work on the script of the film. "However, the film will not go on floors any time soon. Santosh's only priority now is 'Urumi's release. While the Malayam version hit screens a few months ago, he's gearing up to release the Tamil and Telugu versions now," the source adds.

Jeeva enters restaurant business

Jeeva is one actor who truly believes that variety is the spice of life. Be it taking on different characters in film or taking the initiative to turn producer, the man has never hesitated to experiment.

  • And now, Jeeva has taken his 'quest for spice' to another level by getting ready to set up a restaurant in the city. Says a thrilled Jeeva, "I'm a foodie and setting up a good restaurant has been on my agenda for a while. But, before taking on something big, my friend and I decided to begin by starting with a chaat place. So, the two of us took off to Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai among other places to check out the street food there. We went around by foot and tasted everything from pani puri to kulfi. We will open our chaat centre sometime next month. We've even zeroed in on the location and work is on in full swing to refurnish the place and make it look swanky."

On the film front, he's awaiting the completion of 'Nanban'. "My portions are almost over in the film. I will start work with Gautham Menon from August 15. Also, Arya's production company and my production house, will come together to produce a film soon, to be directed by Rajesh. Arya and I will star in the lead," he informs.

Rahman and Gautham team up again

Ilaya thalapathy Vijay will join hands with director Gautham Vasudev Menon for a film titled 'Yohan: Adhyayam Ondru', in 2012. And the big news is that Oscar winner A R Rahman will provide the soundtrack for the film!

The movie will mark the return of the Gautham-Rahman combination post the superhit musical 'Vinnaithaandi Varuvaayaa'. When contacted Rahman about the kind of music he'll be composing for this one, he simply said, "Can't talk now. It is for the next year." Meanwhile, the composer is said to be currently working on Rajinikanth's 'Rana'. It is reliably learnt that Rahman has already composed four songs for the film. Interestingly, one song from the film - a duet sung by Srinivas and Chinmayi - has already been filmed with the female lead of the film, Deepika Padukone.

While speaking about the film director Gautham said, ''It seems very early to talk about the film. We have planned to start the shooting by January 2012. An official announcement will be made soon.''

Nithya Menon in 'Tatsmayam Oru Penkutti'

Young actress Nithya Menon would do the lead role in T K Rajeev Kumar's new film.

The film that has been titled 'Tatsmayam Oru Penkutti' would have Nithya playing the role of a TV reporter.

Sharrath has composed the musical score of the film. The composing was completed last week.

Rajeev Kumar had recently directed 'Rathinirvedam' that starred Swetha Menon and Sreejith.

Nayanthara goes to Bhadrachalam

The grapevine was abuzz that Nayanthara’s speedy conversion to Hinduism is her impending marriage to Prabhu Deva.
But sources close to the actress swear that she has been a regular temple goer, long before she met Prabhu.
However, certain temples in south India especially in Kerala like the famous Sree Krishna temple in Guruvayoor and Sree Seetha Ramachandra Swamy temple at Bhadrachalam, does not allow entry of non-Hindus to the temple.
Nayanthara swan song,is likely to be the Telugu mythological Sri Rama Rajayamdirected by veteran Bapu.

In the film, Balakrishna plays the lead role as Lord Rama with Nayanthara as Seetha. The audio of the film is to be launched today (August 15) evening at Bhadrachalam.
The Sree Seetha Ramachandra Swamy shrine at Bhadrachalam, around 400 kilometres from Hyderabad is the most famous temple in the country dedicated to Lord Rama.

Rama Rajyam team is holding a special pooja at the temple where only Hindus are allowed entry and later audio will be released in a nearby stadium.
Bala Krishna, Nayanthara, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, maestro Ilayaraja and Srikanth would be taken in a chartered helicopter from Hyderabad to Bhadrachalam for the event.

The actress who is playing the all-important role of Seeta in the film is overjoyed that she can pray at the temple.

Remember that the actress who hardly makes any public appearances or attends audio launch even if it is her own films is going to be the cynosure of all eyes at the event.

Amala Paul signs film with Ram Gopal Verma

Looks like Malayaali actress Amala Paul is on the right way to stardom. After a whopping performance in the Tamil film 'Maina', Amala has gone ahead and signed her first Telugu film.

And what's more, this Telugu film would be directed by none other than Ram Gopal Verma!

Amama who had made her debut in films through a small role in Lal Jose's 'Neelathamara' had shot to fame through her films 'Sindhu Samaveli' and 'Maina'. She was also seen alongside Vikram in the film 'Deivathirumagal'.

Amala's first film is an RGV production titled 'Bejavala Rowdilu'. It would be directed by Vivek Krishna, who has been an associate director with Ram Gopal Verma for a long time.

Salt 'n Pepper to be remade in Hindi?

This year's surprise super hit 'Salt 'n Pepper' has wowed audiences outside the state as well. From the looks of it, it seems that Salt 'n Pepper is all set to be remade in Hindi.

It's learned that director Priyadarshan would direct the film in Hindi. The cast and crew of the Hindi version are still being finalised.

Priyan is currently busy with two films - 'Tez' in Hindi that stars Mohanlal, as well as another Malayalam film 'Arabiyum Ottakavaum P.Madhavan Nairum' that stars Mohanlal again.

The director would start the shoot of the Salt 'n Pepper remake, once these two films are ready for release.

Pirated 'Salt 'n Pepper' copies rule the internet

There seems to be no end to piracy in the movie world. Barely a month after Ashiq Abu's 'Salt 'n Pepper' became a superhit, it has been found that pirated copies of the film are readily available on the internet.

This would indeed deliver a huge blow on the film's business. It is estimated that several thousands of users across the world, will have downloaded the movie by now.

Recently, Santhosh Sivan's film 'Urumi' was also found to be available on the internet, weeks within its release. Not just these two films, almost all new Malayalam films are available for illegal download on the internet.

Film makers are trying hard to find out new strategies to counter the piracy threat on the internet. So far however, their efforts have bore little fruit.

Shriya instead of Trisha in Prithvi's 'Hero'

Looks like fans of Trisha are in for a huge disappointment. It was reported earlier that the lovely actress would make her debut opposite Prithviraj in his new film 'Hero'.

But now, it seems that Trisha wouldn't after all be doing this film.

Shriya Saran would be seen as Prithvi's female lead in 'Hero'. The film is being directed by Deepan who had earlier directed the superhit 'Puthiya Mukham'.

Its not yet known why Trisha wouldn't be a part of the film. Whatever be the reason, it looks like the wait to see her in a Malayalam film would be extended even further.

City of God - Review

It all begins with a fatal accident and takes us along to the intricate events that lead to the crash. Obviously it involves the lives of a few individuals and it intertwines in a peculiar way. The format made famous by several spectacular films like Amores Perros, Babel and Crash among many others has been repeated by scenarist Babu Janardhanan and director Lijo Jose Pellissery in City of God.

Jyothilal (Prithviraj) is a criminal, who is ready even to risk his life for his boss Sony Vadayattil (Rajeev Pillai), a wealthy businessman. Viji Punnoose (Swetha Menon) is a widow who has to settle some scores with Jyothilal. Sooryaprabha (Rima Kallingal) is an actress with a sad past that continues to haunt her. Marathakam (Parvathy) is a Tamil labourer, who has come to Kochi, from Palani. She has fled from a failed marriage and is in love with a fellow Tamil worker named Swarnavel (Indrajith).

How their lives come across at certain points, is the interesting aspect here. In all fairness, the storyline is by and large, pretty convincing. But the problem is that in the pursuit of adhering to the film’s format, the pace gets affected in a big way. Also, several details that would have made the narrative more engrossing get sidelined.
There are too many events happening and the characters go through curious situations all the time. After a while, the viewer tends to get bored and lose interest as the story is not focused anywhere. Only a few characters make an impact in the viewer’s mind as well.

Babu Janardhanan’s script lacks the depth that has been the strength of the films in the genre. Lijo Jose Pellissery, who showed great promise with his maiden film ‘Nayakan’, comes up with flashes of brilliance but it is not just working perfectly well here. The visuals by Sujith Vasudev and the music by Prasant Pillai are also good in parts.

Prithviraj has to maintain a sober face all along, which he does pretty well. Indrajith is good as the Tamil labourer. Parvathy, who appears in a thoroughly deglamourised look, is just brilliant. Rima Kallingal looks fine but Swetha Menon has a limited role to play. Rohini, Rajeev Pillai, Sudhir Karamana, Jagadeesh and the rest of the cast have done their roles in a decent way.

City of God has dared to tread an unconventional path and the willingness to experiment, which is quite unlike most Malayalam films during these days, is something to be appreciated. But the question is that if the attempt has been a successful one. Sadly, too many plots have ruined the fun here to a great extent and things even get pretentious at times. As the end credits start rolling, one gets the feeling that this film could have been much better. An earnest experiment that fails to get the perfect results, perhaps!

Resul Pookutty to do a cameo

Oscar winner Resul Pookkutty is donning a  new role.

Resul is making a cameo appearance in the film Sneham+Ishtam= Amma, directed by Jayachandran Ayilara.

Revathy is playing the central character.

Though Resul had done some ad campaigns earlier, this is his first appearance in a movie.

Nedumudi Venu, Jagathy, SurajVenjaramoodu and Kalpana are in the supporting cast.

Music is by MG Sreekumar and Sajeevan. Screenplay is by Haja Moidu. Movie is produced by Bharath Samuel.

Dileep's Mr Marumakan has started rolling

Dileep starrer Mr Marumakan has started rolling in Kochi.

The film had a pooja function held at DD retreat Kochi before the start, last Friday.

Kaviyoor Ponnamma lighted the lamp in the presence of Dileep, K. Bhagyaraj and Sanusha.

Tamil director-actor Bhagyaraj is playing an important role in the movie. Sanusha is the heroine.

Dileep Bhagyaraj combination scenes are going on in Kochi. Earlier the shoot was planned in Hyderabad. But then it has been changed to Kochi.

Movie is directed by Sandhya Mohan and scripted by Siby Udayan duo.

Kamal Haasan at Traffic 100 days Celebration

The first hit of 2011 Traffic celebrated its 100th day in the presence of Dr Kamal Haasan.

Kamal who is rumoured to be doing the Tamil remake was the star attraction of the function held at Gokulam Convention Centre Kochi last Wednesday.

He was in all praise for the director Rajesh Pillai and screenplay writers Bobby and Sanjay.

The entire Traffic team was present at the function.

Kunjakko Boban who was busy with Joshy's Sevens at Kozhikode couldn't attend the function. Buzz is that Rajesh Pillai will direct the movie in Tamil.

A hush hush wedding for Prithviraj, Supriya Menon

Prithviraj, sources claim, will tie the knot with Supriya Menon today!

Much has been written about Prithviraj and his marriage plans to Supriya Menon. Though he hasn't spoken much about the girl, Prithviraj has gone on record to state that there are no marriage plans in the offing.

However, sources continue to state that the actor will indeed be getting married today, April 25, to Supriya in a hush hush wedding at a resort in Palakkad district where his to-be wife hails from.

We are told that Prithviraj wanted his wedding to be a personal and private affair without cameras, and flashlights. Thus, only about 50 people (friends and family included) will be in attendance. If talks are to be believed, Prithviraj intends to host a reception a couple of days after the wedding where he'll invite one and all.

Supriya Menon marries Malayalam actor Prithviraj

BBC World journalist Supriya Menon is getting married to Malayalam actor Prithviraj. As per reports, the couple met more than a year back while Supriya was reporting on southern cinema. Prithviraj used to fly in to Mumbai to meet her.
The couple is tying the knot today in Palakkadu. After the traditional wedding, a grand reception has also been planned in Thiruvananthapuram for the film industry and fans.

Prithviraj to tie the knot today!

(courtesy:sify)

Sify.com broke the story of Malayalam star Prithviraj's secret romance with Supriya Menon, a Mumbai based news reporter.

At that time, we had said he had plans to marry after the release of his ambitious film Urumi, sometime in April.

However, the actor was miffed and refused to acknowledge in public about his lady love.  In fact Prithviraj totally denied his marriage plans.

He went out of his way to trash the report and even called it "idiot journalism".

He did not clarify or deny about his lady love and wedding, and gave three interviews to leading Malayalam publications denying the "report of him getting married".

Now sify.com has found from impeccable sources that Prithviraj is likely to tie the knot today (April 25) at a "hush-hush wedding" at a resort near Palakkad. Though some sources swear the star is getting engaged and the wedding will happen at a temple later.

Remember Prithviraj's fiance's family roots are in Palakkad. A source close to the girl's side said: "Prithviraj wants his wedding to be a private affair and not  to make it a celebrity circus wedding. He does not want to marry in front of hundreds of cameras, and create unnecessary frenzy. Please respect his privacy, as he will be throwing a big reception at a later date."

The buzz is that less than 50 "select people" mainly relatives and close friends have been invited for marriage. The resort has turned into a fortress and nobody other than those with 'special identity cards' is allowed to attend the "exclusive wedding".

Meanwhile a Malayalam tabloid has reported: "Prithviraj has already booked the banquet hall of the five star Le Meridian in Ernakulam for the grand reception to be held on May 1."

Wedding Bells for Prithviraj

Young Malayalam-Tamil superstar Prithviraj has tied the wedding knot with a Mumbai-based news reporter Supriya Menon in a low-profile ceremony held on Monday morning in Thenkurissi Heritage Villa, Palakkad in the presence of his mother Mallika Sukumaran, brother-actor Indrajith, close relatives and friends.

According to a reliable source, the ceremony was attended by around 50 people. The newly-wedded couple will soon arrange a party for their friends in the media and the film industry. A Malayalam tabloid reported that Prithviraj has already booked the banquet hall of the five star Le Meridian in Ernakulam for the grand reception to be held on May 1.

The story of Prithviraj's secret romance with Supriya Menon was big news in the South last month, but Prithiviraj had denied the same.

Surpiya Menon is a reporter in a leading English news channel and works in Mumbai.

Prasanna to debut in Malayalam

Tamil actor Prasanna, a very fine actor is debuting in Malayalam with Akku Akbar in Dileep's untitled new film which has Indrajith and Kavya Madhavan in supporting roles.

Prasanna impressed in critically acclaimed films like Anjaathey, Achamundu Achamundu and a few others.

The actor, who had lived for some time in Kerala, can speak fluently in Malayalam.

Prasanna was impressed with Aku Akbar's narration and has a very powerful role in the film for which shooting started last week in Chennai.

He was to do Lucky Jokers,  a Malayalam film for Tamil production house Aascar Films, but backed out at the last minute

Maappillai - Review

No beating around the bush. Mappillai, as promised, is a mass masala entertainer that makes no bones, no pretences and has a distinctly comic-book feel to it. It is exaggerated and formulaic, but relies squarely on the charm of its leading man to pull off its over-the-top tone.

Saravanan (Dhanush) is introduced as a Mr Nice guy who is upright and god fearing. He meets Gayathri (Hansika) the only daughter of Rajeshwari (Manisha Koirala) a rich arrogant business tycoon. When she comes to know about Gayathri’s affair with Saravanan, she immediately arranges for their marriage as she wants a docile, henpecked husband for her daughter!

But just before the wedding, Rajeshwari is in for a shock as she comes to know that Saravanan has another face and is a terror in his area. How Saravanan marries Gayathri and tries hard to win over Rajeshwari forms the rest of the predictable story. Will he succeed in his attempt and how he goes about it, forms the thrilling moments.

Mappillai benefits enormously from its two core strengths – Dhanush’s scorching screen presence and Manisha Koirala’s performance. Dhanush is consistently watchable and the film is a showcase not so much for his acting, but for his mass image and infectious enthusiasm. Vivek in his lengthy comic role is irritating with his funny accent, make-up and hair-style. The gags are downright silly and he seems to be taking the audience for granted.

Hansika handles her role with confidence, has a smoldering presence, and is never lost even in scenes in which she has nothing to do. Music by Mani Sharma is average with Aaru Padai... and Ready Ready Ya.. being the pick of the lot.

On the whole, Mappillai is a crowd-pleaser that knows exactly who its audience is. For die-hard fans of Dhanush, this old-fashioned entertainer is a treat and delivers enough entertainment for your buck

Yuvan Shankar Raja has tweeted:"Sony says they send the masters to overseas few days before and should have leaked from there! But I'm upset with this. Piracy is killing.  I know Avan Ivan will reach where it has to, I'm not worried about that but this is wrong!"

Remember noted director Bala and Yuvan are coming together after many years.

The combo's last film was the Suriya-Laila Nanda, which had soul stirring music.

Now a lot is expected from Avan Ivan album, where Yuvan has tried out something  different.

Yuvan in an interview has said that it's "hard to satisfy Bala sir with tunes but he is happy with the output for Avan Ivan" . Let's hope the album rocks.

Urumi - Review

Santosh Sivan’s Urumi is a miniature masterpiece of moods, emotions, anxieties ruled by a thirst for revenge. The film unfolds like a ballad and is a sweet and simple fairy tale. The 170 minutes film works to a large extent to its perfect casting, fantastic performances, soothing score and technical brilliance.
Santosh has made it like how a period drama should be made without too much talk about freedom struggle, no bombastic dialogues or playing to the gallery for heroism. His vision and concept gives this epic the feel of a Brave Heart or Gladiator.

It provides us a new insight into the hearts and minds of ancient heroes and shot in locations that reflect the period as everything looks fresh, green and clean and one can feel even the mist. Another major plus is that there are hardly any CG special effects that one would associate with a period war film.

Shankar Ramakrishnan’s script is simple and straightforward and keeps the narrative absorbing and inspiring. The film starts in the present day with a modern don’t care youth Krishna Das (Prithviraj) and his friend (Prabhu Deva) having a jolly good time. A big corporate offers Krishna Das a bomb for his ancestral property in Kerala.

On his arrival in Kerala to sign the papers, he learns the truth about his land and ancestors, which is told in a flashback. A brave warrior (Arya), wants to kill Vasco da Gama, the Viceroy of Portuguese Empire in India. But he is brutally killed by the invaders and his son Chirakkal Kelu Naynar (Prithviraj) is out to take revenge with a golden Urumi, that he makes with the ornaments of dead women and children who were burnt alive in a ship that was going to Mecca. It was set on fire and sunk under the instructions from Vasco Da Gama.

The film is spread between the second and third visit of Gama to India and chronicles a varied version of how Gama could have met a bloody death in 1524 AD. Kelu is supported by his childhood Muslim buddy Vavvali (Prabhu Deva). In the journey he meets warrior princess Ayesha (Genelia), who has her own axe to grind against the foreign invaders. Will they be able to kill Vasco Da Gama ?

The major highlight of the film is the performances of its lead actors. Prithviraj as Kelu Naynar is dashing. You cannot take your eyes of him, it’s a difficult role and he has come out with flying colours especially in the climax scene. Prabhu Deva is there in as many frames as Prithviraj, and is a real treat to watch. He does comedy and romance with ease and the chat song with Nithya is a scream.

However it goes without saying that this is Genelia’s show. She has shed her bubbly image for an out of the world controlled performance and her Kalaripayattu action scenes are thrilling. Nithya Menen looks pretty and is a scene stealer, while Jagathy is outstanding. Amol Gupte, Alex, Robin and others are lifelike. There is also walk in cameo appearances by Arya, Vidya Balan and Tabu.

Music of Deepak Dev enriches the film with Aaro nee aaro, Chimmi Chimmiand the theme music is haunting. A pat for Shankar Ramakrishnan for his intricately crafted script, super editing by Sreekar Prasad without any gimmicks and eye catching beautiful camera work by Sivan and his assistant Anjuli Shukla.

Santosh Sivan has come out with a story of valour with an admirable degree of craftsmanship and clarity. The producers Santosh, Prithviraj and Shaji Natesan can be proud of this epic.
Urumi is a fairy tale fantasy film that has a heart and technical artistry. Go for it.

Nutan Prasad dies

Veteran artist Nutan Prasad, aged 65, passed away on Wednesday due to a prolonged illness, on his way to the Apollo Hospital, Hyderabad.

Born as Tadivada Varaprasad in Kaikalur on December 12, 1945, Nutan Prasad started his acting career with the play `Naa Vote-u` in Guntur and soon debuted on the silver screen with Bapu'sAndaala Raamudu (1973). Needa Leni Aadadi (1974), and Bapu's Muthyala Muggu (1975) made his position secure. His role as Satan in Bapu's Rajadhiraju(1980) brought him popularity and critical appreciation.

He soon graduated to key roles that brought him much-deserved recognition, and his voice and vocal modulation set him apart. He won the Nandi Award for Best Supporting Artist through his role in Ushakiron Movies' Sundari-Subbarao (1984). His roles in many movies such as Mogudu Kaavali, Khaidi, Aha Naa Pellanta, Mantrigaari Viyyakandu, Adavi Donga and Muddula Chellulu were quite popular.

An accident during the shooting of Baamma Maata-Bangaaru Baata (1989), when Rajendra Prasad and Nutan Prasad fell to the ground when a crane's cable broke loose while they were in the "super car" floating in the air, caused him severe damage. He continued acting again, with Vijayashanti-starrer Karthavyam (1990). His real life pain was heart wrenchingly depicted through his real-life role in Sarpa Yaagam (1991), Paruchuri brothers' directorial venture starring Sobhan Babu.

Soon, the roles that Nutan Prasad could play became limited as he was confined to a wheel chair. He dubbed for late Gummadi in Aayanakiddaru(1995) as the artiste had issues with his voice at that time. He then moved on to the television with the advent of channels such as the ETV. His dialogues such as "nootokka jillaala andagaadini", " desamlO chaalaa klishta paristhitullO undi. Right nunchi China, Left nunchi Pakistan..." were quite popular and featured in almost all mimicry performances of the times.

Nutan Prasad was awarded the NTR Award for the year 2005. He's survived by a son (Nutan Kumar, who also acted in films) and two daughters.

Reemma Sen her good friend too came down from Mumbai for the party which also saw many top stars and technicians from the K'wood in full presence to sing Happy Birthday.

The buzz is that her house was decorated with flowers and candles, food was Mughalai and music was foot tapping.

The party which started early by 8pm went on till the wee hours of the morning and Sonia looked thrilled to bits.

Among all the gifts that she got, Sonia loved the Tag Heuer watch with a black dial and diamonds that her mummy dearest gifted her.

My Malayalam films are gifts for my parents : Vidya Balan

Actress Vidya Balan, who is one of the busiest artistes in Bollywood has taken a special interest in Malayalam films.

The actress had recently done a cameo in 'Urumi', directed by Santhosh Sivan.

Vidya would also be doing a key role in the Mohanlal - Priyadarshan film 'Arabiyum, Ottakavum, P Madhavan Nairum'.

Vidya was originally supposed top make her debut in films through Lohithadas' 'Chakram', in which she was paired with Mohanlal, Unfoprtunately the film was shelved.

Vidya says that she is all excited about doing Malayalam films. Hailing from Palakkad, she is a Malayali. "My Malayalam films are gifts for my parents'" the actress says with a smile.

Bangkok reminded me of Kerala: Asin

The pretty Asin is back in Mumbai after a lengthy spell of shooting in Bangkok forReady.

She's happy to be back home after so long. But she never missed Mumbai in Bangkok.

"Not that I was allowed to miss home. Salman and the crew were so much fun," she said. "But more than that the topography in Bangkok resembled my native place Kerala so much. In fact, the greenery that I carry with me wherever I go was manifested in both the long outdoors for Ready - first Sri Lanka and then Bangkok. It was like taking my home to the shooting."

In fact, Asin felt so much at home in Bangkok that her Blackberry status-message described the greenery and the scenery with the pride of ownership.

Laughs Asin, "My friends who read it thought I was in Kerala. That's how much at home I felt in Bangkok."

Making Asin feel even more at home was Salman, who made sure she was well looked after in her parents' absence.

Salman looked out for Asin throughout the long schedule in Bangkok.

"I think it was the ambience. We were working like one big family," said Asin. "I had gone without my parents. But I didn't feel lonely for even a second."

Ra.One's first look is pretty confusing

Shah Rukh Khan and director Anubhav Sinha finally shared a glimpse of the much-awaited superhero flick Ra.One.

And, frankly, we were a little disappointed.

Not only did the 10-second clip give us a headache just trying to keep up with what was happening, several of the stunts reminded us of Krrish andMatrix.

And here we were expecting something totally new. Or at least a tad bit different!

The second one - the 30-second clip - however, gave us a little more time to appreciate the stunts: a buff SRK defy gravity and cartwheel up a building, an armour-clad SRK break the floor as he lands on it, a Magneto-like SRK flip cars like frisbees, and an intense SRK, all aglow in blue, receive the tender ministrations of a woman.

The jury is still out on this one.
Though the look and feel of the film is slick, and a lot of attention has been paid to the stunts and the special effects, there is a sense of deja vu.
We just hope SRK - who looks better in Ra.One than he's done in quite some time - has a surprise up his lycra sleeves!

Dhanush's 'Maappillai' getting ready for release

Kalanidhi Maran will be presenting his next entertainer 'Maappillai', under his banner Sun Pictures. As for now, the crew is busy in the post production works and the film is likely to be released in a couple of weeks.

While speaking about the film, director Suraaj said, "I have only taken the crux of the Rajni starrer 'Maappillai' and have modified this film to suit the present trend. It's all about the ego clashes between the mother-in-law and her son-in-law. Dhanush plays 'Saravanan', whose mischief and romance scenes are very bubbly. Hansika Motwani is the heroine. Ashish Vidyarthi does the villain perfectly. Vivek is acting as 'Child Chinna', whose ambition is to somehow pass the 10th examination. How he tries to do this has been narrated in a very funny way. Apart from this, I should say about Mani Sharma. He has composed five songs and each one will be of a different genre. We have shot a song in a festival set erected at the cost of Rs 1 Crore. Satish, of 'Peranmai' fame has handled the camera. After this film, Dhanush will become the son-in-law of the whole Tamil Nadu."

Hollywood stunt master for Vijay

For the first time, a Hollywood stunt master is working with actor Vijay in his upcoming flick 'Velaayudham'. After the super hit 'Kaavalan', 'Ilaya thalapathy' Vijay now has a bunch of films in his hands including 'Velaayudham' with Jayam Raja, 'Nanban' with Shankar and 'Pagalavan' with Seeman.

Interestingly, 'Velaayudham' is the 52nd film for Vijay. The film directed by Jayam Raja and produced by Auscar Ravichandran, has Genelia and Hansika Motwani in the lead. Saranya Mohan is donning the role of Vijay's sister in the film. Moreover, this is an action film filled with humor and Vijay Anthony composed some memorable tunes. At this moment, the stunt sequences in the film have been orchestrated by Hollywood stunt master Tom Delmar. The film is likely to hit the screens on Vijay's birthday.

A. R. Rahman is to compose for TV series

Double Oscar winner A. R Rahman has been so dedicated that he makes it a point of giving same priority to anything he takes up. Be it a Hollywood movie or a track for sports, he exerts his herculean efforts to give the best. And the latest news is that the 'Mozart of Madras' forays into small screen.

Yes, director Gautham Vasudev Menon has decided to venture into small screen with a crime TV series that revolves around a detective (played by actor Parthipan) solving murder mystery. Each week will have a murder mystery solved. The grapevine is that Gautham has roped in Rahman to compose the music for his series. And Rahman too accepted his invite and he will compose the music for this TV series with a title song like 'X Files' and background score. Initially, the series was to be telecasted on 'Kalaingar Television', but now it will telecast on Vijay TV.

Nayanthara- Woman in love

She is as slippery as an eel, when it comes to the media.

With a doting boyfriend and five consecutive hits in all the four south Indian languages, Nayanthara who is on a self-imposed hiatus, is in her own world.

Producers are desperately trying to call her up but the actress remains inaccessible and is refusing all the lucrative offers that are coming her way.

So why is Nayan who has slowly but surely blossomed as an actress of substance refusing films?

The buzz is that she is keeping a low profile till her impending marriage to ace choreographer-director Prabhu Deva.

People close to her say that Prabhu makes her world go round and she is keeping herself occupied by spending quality time with her parents, learning cooking and doing up her new home in Kochi.

Nayan who is yet to complete work on her Telugu film Rama Rajyam, will join the sets for the last schedule sometime in April in Hyderabad.

She seems to be happy and perhaps there couldn't be more that she could ask for.

Jyothirmayi files for divorce

One time top Malayalam and Tamil actress Jyothirmayi has filed her divorce petition today (March 23) at the Ernakulam Family court. She had married in 2003 her childhood lover Nishanth, a software engineer working in the gulf.

Last two years the marriage was on the rocks, as
Jyothirmayi wanted to more films.

Jyothirmayi's claim to fame was singing the super hit song Chingamaasam Vannuchernnal  with Dileep in Meesa Madhavan. The song and her dancing became a sensation. Later she did films like Kalyanaraman Ishtam, Pattalam, Hariharan Pillai Happyanu, Ente Veedum Appuvinteum, Janakan etc.

Jyothirmayi also had a decent innings in Kollywood with hit films like Thalai Nagaram, where she played Sundar C's heroine, Idhaya Thirudan, Periyar where she played the role of Nagamma,  Sabari, Naan Avanillai, Arrai Enn 305 il Kadavul and her last release was Vedigundu Murugesan with Pasupathy as her hero.

Her performance in Satish Menon's Bhavum proved that she is an actress of substance and  won her a Kerala State Award and the special mention of the jury in the National Film Awards. She was known in Malayalam cinema as a "thinking man's heroine" while in Tamil cinema, it was her "oomph factor" that worked at the box-office.

The buzz in film circles in Kochi is that Jyothirmayi had given interviews in which she had stated that her husband had no problem in seeing her in glamour roles on screen. In Naan Avanillai she did very glamorous song with Tamil actor Jeevan, which ultimately led to problems in her marriage. Now the big question being asked is whether Jyothirmayi would return to the big screen?

August 15 - Movie Review

Director Shaji Kailas has taken the character of the likeable cop Perumal from the 1988 film August 1 (directed by Siby Malayil) and has made the thriller, August 15.

While the earlier film (inspired from the 1973 movie The Day of the Jackal) was full of lively and powerful characters, including a tough looking professional killer played by Captain Raju, the new version is a letdown, without a credible storyline or a worthy script.

A feel of the earlier movie is intentionally maintained all along, but it turns out to be a meek looking misadventure.

Chief Minister Vasudevan (Nedumudi Venu) is in a critical condition in the hospital following a stroke and the top brass of the police is shocked to learn that actually he had been poisoned by someone.

The search for the culprit begins soon and the investigation is entrusted with Perumal (Mammootty).

The killer and the main persons who plot against the chief minister are revealed pretty early and then, it is the investigation process that should be a gripping one. Sadly, it doesn’t happen so and the unraveling of the mystery is a boring affair here.

With an old narrative style, the film appears to be a never ending affair for the viewers, though the length is about two and a half hours. S N Swami’s script is too old fashioned and is based on a rather flimsy plot. The visuals by Pradeep Nair are okay.

In a role where his heroism is celebrated in virtually every frame, Mammootty looks handsome and has done the role in a devoted way. But all the efforts are not enough to salvage a poorly written film. Of course, there is enough for the gallery, as he takes on even the fiery criminals all alone, in style with his sunglasses intact and often without a gun!

Meghna Raj and Swetha Menon, the female leads as per the posters, have nothing much to do. Lalu Alex, as a silly ADGP, does manage to tickle the funny bone at times. Now, it is certainly not fair to compare a character in a film with one in the earlier version, but the professional killer played by Siddique is nowhere near the one made famous by Captain Raju.

You’ve to admit it,August 15 which is meant to be a thriller, fails to do so. Even if you are a hardcore fan of Mammootty, it won’t entertain you much.
